Getting Started
Copy all The Multimedia Workshop files into a single
subdirectory on your hard disk.
********************* LET'S GET STARTED *********************
There are two ways to learn to use a program like this one
(Actually there's nothing 'like' The Multimedia Workshop,
but you know what I mean):
You can read all the documentation, and then start
practicing, or you can just start it up, and experiment until
you understand it. With The Multimedia Workshop, that's
pretty easy to do, because it is quite user-friendly. There's
plenty of on-line help. But you'll definitely want to check
this file out after a while to find out about all the tricks
The Multimedia Workshop can do.
Either way, experimentation is very important, because
there are many things that you'll learn to do, or to do
better with practice. There's a lot to this multimedia
business.
So, what I'm going to attempt to do is cover everything
in a logical order. This order is to take you from start-up
through every item on the control panel, then finish off
with talk about other features and inside tips.
On your disk is a text presentation program called
DREAM.EXE (which you may already be using) to display this
file. Anytime you want to look up something specific, press
the [S] key, and type the word or phrase you are looking for.
DREAM.EXE will take you directly to the place you want to
read. You may also want to try DREAM's AUTOSCROLL feature.
Simply press a number key ([1] through [9]) to turn it on,
and any other key when you want to turn Autoscroll off. To
change the speed, press a different number.
LET'S REALLY GET STARTED
All software manuals start this way: Make a back-up copy of
your disk and put it somewhere safe.
If you have a mouse, make sure your mouse driver is loaded.
Then switch to the drive/directory containing The Multimedia
Workshop and type MW, and press [Enter]. (From this point
forward, for ease of reading, I won't say, "press [Enter]"
when doing so would be obvious.)
Press any key to get past the opening screen. You will be
asked to name a file. This can be any DOS-legal filename,
meaning up to 8 letters or digits, and optionally a period
and up to 3 more letters or digits. You can also precede the
filename with standard drive and path designation. You can
not create a picture file with * or ? or any other such
punctuation.
THE CONTROL PANEL
(The Main Menu)
The screen flashes blank for a moment, then the control panel
appears. The control panel is the main menu of The
Multimedia Workshop. There are 30 items on the panel and you
can choose any item any time the panel is on-screen. Many of
these 30 options have several more sub-options when selected.
The control panel will cover over your picture anytime you
must make a selection, then disappears so you can work on
your picture.
